Instructions
Toast the Sesame Seeds: If your sesame seeds are not already toasted (some stores will sell toasted sesame seeds), then toast them before adding them to the chicken. Place into a saute pan, over low heat and toast through. Toss the sesame seeds a few time to avoid burning. This should only take a few minutes or so. Remove from stove and set aside to cool. You can even do this step the day before.
Marinate the Chicken: Cut chicken into bite size pieces and place into a baking dish or a plastic bag (that you can seal). Whisk together the marinade ingredients: Tamari, brown sugar and sesame oil. Season with S&P and then pour over chicken. Place chicken in fridge to marinate for approx. and hour or so.
Making the sauce : Place a small pot on stove. Add all the sauce ingredients: honey, sweet chili sauce, ketchup, tamari and water and whisk together. Bring to a boil then lower heat to low and simmer until the sauce starts to thicken up.
In a bowl, combine flour, cornstarch and a pinch of S&P. Remove chicken from fridge and remove from the marinade. Place chicken in the flour mixture then transfer to a plate. Repeat until all chicken is coated in the flour mixture.
Cooking the Chicken: Place a wok or large saute pan on the stove, over High heat. Add about 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil to the pan once it is hot. Add the chicken and cook until done, about 6 minutes or so (cooking time varies, depending on how large your pieces of chicken are). If your pan is not big enough you can use 2 pans on the stove. As soon as chicken is cooked, transfer the chicken to a large mixing bowl. Pour your sauce over the chicken, add the sesame seeds and gently toss to coat all the pieces in the sauce and seeds. Transfer to a platter with your sides.
We served our sesame chicken with wild rice and steamed broccoli. I placed everything on a large platter and served it family style. I also gave everyone chopsticks for some fun!
Mangia! Enjoy!
Tips
If you do not have or cannot find Tamari you can use Soy Sauce in place of it. Most supermarkets sell Tamari in their Organic aisle. Some may even sell it with the Soy Sauce now. Tamari is a great GF (gluten free) option. If you want to make this meal completely gluten free then you’ll also want to substitute the flour. I have made this recipe both ways, the non-gf way and as a gf recipe and both are just as good. No one knew any different.
