My daughter is almost at those teenage years where they start to become more independant every day. She has recently expressed an interest in learning how to cook. She even picked a class this year in school, what I called back in the day, Home Economics. I found out that they don’t call it that anymore. Boy, I felt old when she looked at me funny when I asked her if that is what her class is. Hello mom, apparently they have new fancier names now! Call it what they like, but it sounds the same to me. The students are learning the same basic skills in the kitchen. I love that my daughther has taken such an interest in learning how to cook. Not only is she wanting to learn how to cook but she is asking dear old mom to teach her at home. She is so fascinated by my blog and of me taking pictures of all this food. So, Emma’s in the Kitchen w/Dee was born! We will work on new recipes each weekend together so she can learn how to use new kitchen tools, measuring & combining ingredients together. Most importantly and the most fun part, taste testing them all!
Our first lesson was how to sharpen our knives! I have learned over the years that a dull knife is more dagerous than a sharp one! Emma learned how to properly hold and cut ingredients with some rather large knives; she thought that was pretty cool.
Lesson two was how to make a pumpkin pie and homemade pie crust. She was so impressed with how her pie turned out. I must admit, I was very impressed too. She even made some decorative pumpkins out of her homemade pie crust to add to the top of the pie.
Our lessons together will also allow Emma to express her creative side in the kitchen. Join us each week as we come up with new recipes to try and taste! You can find us in the Events section.
