I don’t know if you are like me, but when it comes to football I can honestly say that I don’t know a heck of a lot about the game! I listen to my husband, son and even my father all talk about the games and I feel like I am listening to another language. I think I need to sign up for a class just to learn all the football lingo so that I can keep up. I know just enough to realize the team has a quarterback, a kicker and a linebacker. I even know some lingo like “touchdown” and “punt” But when they start discussing plays like “down” and “drive” and “rushing” I am lost. So, I know I will be in trouble these next few weekends with all the NFL playoff games and then the big game in February for the Super Bowl.
See, I know a little something; I know enough to know that Super Bowl Sunday is the 2nd largest day of food consumption, after Thanksgiving. It is most likely one of the most watched television shows every year. Why is this all important to me? well, the football itself really isn’t, unless my home team is playing. It does however mean that I start thinking of what I am going to cook and serve during the games. It is all my husband and son keep talking about lately. They keep asking me what I am going to make for all the game days. After all, what I do know, is food and I also know that everyone likes to snack on good food during game time.
We have had our share of Super Bowl parties and they have been a lot of fun to host. Over the years, we have hosted Super Bowls parties from small crowds of about 6 people to large crowds of over 20 people. It is fun to get everyone together to cheer on their favorite team (if they are lucky enough to have their favorite team playing) and enjoy some good food & drinks. I, of course, love the commercials during the Super Bowl game!
Some of our favorite game day foods have included:
- Wings
- Boneless Wings
- Homemade Blue Cheese dressing & celery for all those wings
- Stromboli
- Chips & Dips like a hot jalapeno popper dip
- Hoagies-hot & cold
- Meatballs: who doesn’t love a big crock pot of meatballs w/sauce? Serve with some nice rolls and everyone can make sandwiches.
- Sliders-beef, chicken or any kind you like.
- Mini hot dogs a.k.a. pigs in blankets **my kid’s favorite!
Then there are the desserts like cookies and brownies or ice cream. There are so many great recipes to choose from. Do you have your lineup ready? Whether you want to make quick & easy appetizers or more elaborate and decadent dishes, be ready to tackle the kitchen for those hungry football fans.
